Day before Thanksgiving…

So, posts this week are going to be pretty light – given the holiday and my general laziness.

But there are a few matters of business I wanted to post before disappearing into a stuffing-induced coma tomorrow.

First – I know I said that Fuck Yeah Hipster Kitty was your new favorite. Now it’s time for a NEW new favorite, and it comes to you in the form of a blog called Hyperbole and a Half. This chick is fucking hysterical and she has funny stories about her dogs. Could you ask for anything more? Oh yea, throw in some clever Microsoft Paint images. Yup – perfection.

Second – I couldn’t post my normal Tuesday is Boozeday post yesterday, so here it is: Apple Cider au Pear!

Recipe courtesy of Michael Snyder at About.com

  • 3/4 oz. brandy
  • 1/2 oz. pear brandy
  • 4 to 5 oz. apple cider
  • ground cinnamon
  • ground nutmeg
  • 1 apple
  • ice
Fill a shaker with ice. Add brandy, pear brandy and apple cider. Add two dashes ground cinnamon. Add one dash ground nutmeg. Shake. Pour with rocks into a rocks glass, or strain into a martini glass. Garnish with an apple slice.

Republicans really classed up the joint again today – defeating the Paycheck Fairness Act this week with their cunning use of filibuster. In fact, the Senate Democrats failed to get this bill though because they basically couldn’t get their own party’s shit together. It failed to override the GOP filibuster by TWO VOTES.

The bill would have ensured that an existing law could actually be enforced, and make sure that women weren’t penalized if they tried to find out how much their male counterparts were making.  Scumbags in the Senate opposed this because they felt it added already too litigious society. Right, god forbid women had an equal opportunity to be paid for their work, and protection under the law. Jeesh – what were we thinking? Better get back to being barefoot and pregnant before some man notices.

The National Women’s Law Center recently did a short, but very awesome video called “Women are not Worth Less.” It succinctly shows how significant the wage gap still is…. with women making 23 percent less than men.

If you are looking for who to blame tomorrow when you open up your 77-cents-on-the-dollar paycheck, Amy Siskind of The New Agenda, did a pretty great job on the Huffington Post yesterday listing the missteps – which certainly reaches across the aisle in a very bipartisan fashion.

But I think for now I will hold my most firey hate for the Republicans. What’s next, attempt to cut funding for public radio? Oh wait, they already tried that. Maybe kicking puppies?

If you haven’t seen this – WATCH IT NOW. One of the funniest, saddest and most brilliant takes on Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and McCain’s flip-floppy stance I have ever seen.

“It’s the ‘maverick’ way. Spend a year studying whether or not soldiers deserve full civil rights, and a half-an-hour deciding who will be your presidential running mate.”

Once again confirmed by her acceptance speech for the 2010 Mark Twain Prize. My favorite part of the speech was the part that wasn’t televised on PBS:

And, you know, politics aside, the success of Sarah Palin and women like her is good for all women – except, of course –those who will end up, you know, like, paying for their own rape kit ‘n’ stuff, But for everybody else, it’s a win-win. Unless you’re a gay woman who wants to marry your partner of 20 years – whatever. But for most women, the success of conservative women is good for all of us. Unless you believe in evolution. You know – actually, I take it back. The whole thing’s a disaster.

If you love sparkling wines as much as I do, you will also be anxious to make this next time friends are over (or on a Sunday morning just for kicks).

Crimson Cranberry Sparkler
• Cava sparkling wine (I am also thinking Prosecco would be perfect for this too)
• 1 shot of organic cranberry nectar
• ½ shot of ginger cognac

If you are really channeling the Martha Stewart inside you, garnished with some home-made candied ginger.

Recipe courtesy of Hudson Valley Magazine.
